Forest nightmare: Thai workers shot, chased by driver

Seven Thai berry pickers were pursued, threatened, and shot at with an airgun. One of them was hit in the thigh. The terrifying ordeal began when a car following them fired a shot that shattered the berry pickers' side window. Glass fragments injured one person in the face.

The man was caught on surveillance cameras as he purchased ammunition at a store in Älvsbyn before the shots were fired in Vidsel.

The man first fired shots at the berry pickers about five kilometers from Vidsel.

–  Everyone in the car was shaken by the attack, said one of the berry pickers during a police interview soon after the incident last September.

Upon reaching their camp in Renkronan, they reported the incident to their employer's contact person.

Disturbingly, the same car reappeared later, with the driver rolling down the window and aiming an airgun at them again. This time, the 25-year-old man from Älvsbyn fired two shots from 15-20 meters away, striking one of the berry pickers in the thigh.

– I was terrified, said the injured victim two days later.

–  We're all still afraid. Every passing car makes us jumpy.

The man faces charges of assault, aggravated threats, vandalism, and weapons offenses. He denies everything and refuses to speak with police. However, officers who arrested him reported that he claimed to be alone in the car while driving through Vidsel.

The weapons charge stems from a harpoon gun found at his residence during the arrest.
