Strike called by healthcare workers - Skellefteå affected

The Swedish Association of Health Professionals (Vårdförbundet) has announced a strike affecting approximately 2,000 members across five regions, including Västerbotten. This includes staff at Norrland University Hospital (NUS) and Skellefteå Hospital.

Jenny Olsson, chair of the Swedish Association of Health Professionals in Västerbotten, says it's uncertain whether more workplaces will be affected by strike notices in the future. The current focus is on this particular, impactful action.

The strike is scheduled to begin at 11:00 on June 4. Until then, the ongoing overtime ban, already impacting 68,000 people, will remain in effect. This information was communicated in a press release from the Swedish Association of Health Professionals (Vårdförbundet)

The strike notice affects roughly 2,000 members and non-unionized workers in the Stockholm, Västra Götaland, Skåne, Östergötland, and Västerbotten regions. Biomedical analysts, radiology nurses, and general nurses are among the affected professions. Notably, psychiatry, children's units, and women's healthcare will be exempt from the strike action.

– The Swedish Association of Local Authorities and Regions (SKR) has not received a mandate from municipalities and regions to engage in negotiations with Vårdförbundet," explains Jenny Olsson, chair of Vårdförbundet in Västerbotten.

The overtime ban will remain in effect, but the hiring ban in the regions will be lifted from June 4 at 16:00.

– Our goal is to save healthcare, and now it's up to the employer to take action.

–  The entire Västerbotten region is affected, Olsson clarifies.

–  While the majority impacted are at NUS, the radiology department in Skellefteå is also included in the notice.

A total of 2,000 members across all regions are affected, with 286 in Västerbotten and approximately 20 members specifically in Skellefteå's radiology department. It is important to note that this notice also applies to non-unionized workers.

Olsson emphasizes that not all healthcare facilities will be directly impacted.

– The burden lies with the employer to reorganize the healthcare system to minimize disruption, she explains.

– We carefully selected these five regions to avoid jeopardizing patient care. The employer can provide care in other locations, and these two weeks allow them to ensure a smooth transition.

Vårdförbundet's demands

Vårdförbundet is pushing for a gradual reduction in working hours for healthcare workers. This demand stems from the high workload perceived by their members, particularly impacting part-time employees.

The data reveals that 30% of Vårdförbundet members work part-time, often due to the perceived unmanageability of full-time hours. This excessive workload disproportionately affects younger employees, with four out of ten expressing doubts about remaining in the profession.

However, the association highlights that many part-time workers would consider transitioning to full-time positions if working hours were reduced.
