Rain expected soon but Midsummer should be dry

After several days of drought and high risk of wildfires, some rain may finally arrive, according to SMHI's forecast. On Thursday and into the night leading up to Midsummer, much-awaited summer rain is expected in parts of the county, although it remains uncertain whether it will reach all the way to the coast, as reported by VK.

Sometime around lunchtime on Thursday, SMHI expects rain over the mountain areas and the interior of Västerbotten.

Already on Wednesday, the cloud cover is expected to thicken over Västerbotten County.

– Stacked clouds will build up during the day, but they seem to be somewhat disconnected from the front that will later arrive. We believe that front will move in from the south fairly late on Wednesday evening. In the early hours, it will reach the mountains before spreading eastward across the county, says Erik Höjgård-Olsen, a meteorologist at SMHI, to VK.

Around lunchtime on Thursday, SMHI predicts rain in the mountainous areas and inland parts of Västerbotten. Meteorologists also observe tendencies of lighter rain along the coast, but the amount remains uncertain.

– At the moment, it seems to be relatively small amounts that could fall along the coastal strip, but I don't think we can rule out rain there either, says Höjgård-Olsen.

In the mountainous areas, the largest amounts are expected, locally up to 20 millimeters, while in the inland areas, it could range between 10 and 20 millimeters.

The rain front appears to move northward during the night or Friday morning. After that, Midsummer's Eve is expected to have predominantly dry weather, according to SMHI.

- There may be some lingering rain from Robertsfors and northward along the coast on Friday morning. The question is how long it will persist, but it will weaken during the afternoon and evening, says Höjgård-Olsen.
