According to Flightradar24, the plane flew over Stockholm and other parts of Sweden before continuing north over the Gulf of Bothnia.
It then passed near Umeå and turned right west of Robertsfors, flying over Ånäset and the coast outside Lövånger before heading towards Finland.
The plane circled over the Gulf of Bothnia for several hours before heading south at 15:30. The defense forces stated that the plane is a Boeing KC-135R Stratotanker, participating in an exercise with Swedish and Finnish fighter pilots.
– It is a joint exercise between Sweden and Finland. Our fighter pilots are practicing air refueling and we have borrowed an American plane, says Andrea Wahlberg Scott, spokesperson for the Swedish Armed Forces.
According to Wahlberg Scott, the exercise was previously planned and is unrelated to Finland's recent membership in the NATO defense alliance on Tuesday.
– For a long time, Sweden has had well-established collaborations with Finland and NATO. This type of exercise is common, she says
The Finnish Air Force has posted information about the exercise on social media. In a post on Instagram, the Finnish Air Force stated that the exercise is also continuing on Wednesday.
