On Tuesday the County Administrative Board announced its decision on hunting licences for this year's moose hunt. The goal is for around 10,000 moose to be shot in Västerbotten, which is slightly fewer than previous years.

The Västerbotten moose population has previously been too large according to the County Administrative Board which has a preferred number of 20,000 moose in the county. It is currently estimated that the county is home to 23,000 moose.

The purpose of decreasing the moose population is to protect tree plantations and access to grazing for moose. There is also a goal of reducing the number of traffic accidents involving moose.

The County Administrative Board issues licences to local hunters stipulating how many moose they are allowed to shoot.

The aim is to control the amount of animals and keep a healthy population.

Being able to hunt and keep firearms requires a hunting licence.

The moose hunt occurs between September 1–September 25, 2023.
