The Met Institute issues a warning for severe winds

The end of the year will be properly windy both in the mountains and along the coasts says the Swedish Meteorological and Hydrological Institute, SMHI. Those who are celebrating the new year skiing in the mountains will have to brace themselves for hard winds in combination with heavy snowfall.

A yellow warning was issued on the Sunday for heavy winds and severe snow showers in the mountain regions of Norrbotten and northern Västerbotten.

For Monday, SMHI has increased and extended the warning. The warning for the mountain region of Norrbotten has been increased to orange where a storm is expected.

A yellow warning for very severe winds has been issued for the mountains of Jämtland and Västerbotten. A yellow warning for very severe winds also applies for the coast and inland in northern Västerbotten and Norrbotten with a risk of problems in traffic, power cuts and damage to forests.

There is also a yellow warning for gales along pretty much all coasts.

– Monday is the worst day but the New Year holiday seems to be significantly calmer when it comes to wind in the mountains, says meteorologist Kjell Lund at SMHI.

Due to earlier bad weather, over the Christmas holidays, the train traffic between Kiruna and Narvik in Norway has been cancelled but it is planned to resume again. SJ and the Swedish Transport Administration assess that the bad weather will have calmed down before trains pass through the area.

– We currently have no plans on cancelling traffic again, says Lina Edström at SJ’s press office.

And the weather for Tuesday, New Year's Eve?

– It will be cold in the north, that we are sure of. Low pressure will quickly pass through Götaland so there will be rain or snow. Svealand will get snow. And from 2 January the temperature will be below zero in the whole country, Kjell Lund summarises.
