Northvolt plans major expansion of temporary housing

Northvolt aims to significantly expand the temporary housing area in Ursviken. The temporary housing supplier, Algeco, has applied for a building permit. "The residences will primarily be used for contractors," says Sanna Bäckström, communicator at Northvolt Ett.

The first building permit for temporary housing under Northvolt's expansion in the former Scharinsområdet in Ursviken was granted in March 2020.

Since then, the area has grown in stages, and currently houses 836 eight-square-meter modular units, along with a reception, gym, and common areas.

"With several construction projects in the area gearing up this spring, we're preparing temporary housing solutions for the workforce," says Sanna Bäckström, communicator at Northvolt Ett, speaking from the contractor residences on Solbacken.

But the expansion doesn't stop there. Algeco, a company specializing in temporary housing, has applied for a building permit to add ten new buildings, totaling 364 rooms in one- and two-story units.

Additionally, the proposal includes improving the access road to the modular residences to reduce traffic through the rest of the residential areas.

– The residences will primarily be used for contractors, says Sanna Bäckström, communicator at Northvolt Ett.

– We have several construction projects that are gearing up this spring, so we are preparing temporary housing solutions for them.

The new residences will resemble the existing ones at Ursviken.

Will the Solbacken area also be expanded?

– We're starting with Ursviken and expanding on existing agreements, she continues.

– We don't rule out expansion in Solbacken, either.

Algeco's application for a building permit for the new residences extends until December 31, 2034.

There are other plans for the area in the future.

Last year, a European architecture competition attracted many proposals showcasing how the Scharin area in Ursviken, heavily polluted by previous industries, could be developed into a new, safe and sustainable neighborhood.
