Why there are fewer eggs than usual in Skellefteå

There is a shortage of eggs in Sweden, which means fewer than usual on Skellefteå shelves according to traders in town. "We have eggs, but it's a bit difficult to know what we get, what we have for the day," says Jörgen Furberg, store manager at Stora Coop Norrböle in Skellefteå.

There is no acute egg shortage in Skellefteå. "But it's a bit difficult to know what we're getting," says Jörgen Furberg, store manager at Stora Coop Norrböle.

Sweden is currently facing an egg shortage due to a salmonella outbreak, and to make matters worse, the largest egg packaging plant in Norrland was destroyed in a fire just before Easter. The affected facility was Pelle & Lisa's egg packaging plant in Valne, located in the municipality of Krokoms in Jämtland, which also packages Norrland eggs.

This shortage has affected many stores, including those in Skellefteå. Norran has reached out to several stores in the area to determine the availability of eggs.

According to Lovisa Buren, an employee at Ica Kvantum in Skellefteå, they have never run out of eggs completely, and their shelves are currently 85% full. "We have been quick to find alternative solutions, and we never completely ran out over Easter," she said.

Jörgen Furberg, of Stora Coop Norrböle, reported that they currently have about 50% of their shelves filled with eggs, and they hope to have them up to 75% by Friday. Both Buren and Furberg remain optimistic about the situation.

Buren stated that Norrland Eggs should be back in production by the first two weeks of May, while Furberg reassured that the issue is temporary and that there should be no cause for concern.
