Burman delivers scathing rebuke of government in radio interview

Skellefteå's municipal leader Lorents Burman (Social Democrats) criticized the government in an interview with SVT's P1 morning show, arguing that more support is needed to address Skellefteå's housing crisis. "We're in the midst of a green transition," he told P1 Morgon, "and the government should have the resources to tackle this issue."

"Both this year and next are causing us great concern, as it takes a considerable amount of time to initiate and finish the projects, even with Skebo's intervention," Lorents Burman told P1.

Skellefteå municipality is set to approve a new strategy in September aimed at reaching a population of 125,000 by 2050. The plan calls for constructing 1,500 homes annually, a target that appears unattainable for both this and next year.

– We have no other option, said Burman on P1 Morgon.

– The population is exploding due to rapid job growth, but we're facing enormous challenges.

Burman accused the government of inaction, claiming repeated unsuccessful attempts to secure state funding.

– Numerous developers were ready to start projects but were refused loans by banks.

Despite the lack of government assistance, efforts are underway. Skellefteå municipality has invested in apartment projects, and the municipality's construction company, Skebo. plans to build 5.5 billion kronor worth of housing in the coming years. But it's not enough, says Burman,

– Both this year and next are causing us great concern, as it takes a considerable amount of time to initiate and finish the projects, even with Skebo's intervention, Burman told P1.
