Skellefteå city center hit by water leak

A water leak has been detected underground near St. Olov's Church in Skellefteå. "The leak appears to be somewhere in the pipeline leading into the church," says David Vernersson, unit manager at the municipal Water and Sewer Department. As a result, the water supply to the church has been shut off. To locate the leak precisely, it may be necessary to excavate another trench.

According to David Vernersson, unit manager of the water and sewage network at the municipality, the reason they have been searching for a water leak in the area is that the streets have become wet. At present, they do not know if the leak is on the municipality's or the church's land.

The excavation on Kyrkogatan outside Sankt Olovs church started on Tuesday.

 – We have a water leak and we are trying to see where it is along the pipe leading to Sankt Olovs church, says Vernersson.

 –  We are investigating exactly where it is underground, but it is on its way into the church. We then need to investigate how big an operation is needed and what needs to be done to avoid causing too much damage there. We are trying to find out what is the most appropriate thing to do.

 – We want to try to avoid breaking down walls and trees and preserve it as it is, he continues.

The water was shut off on Wednesday, and Vernersson believes that only the church is affected by the shutdown at the moment.

 – But it is possible that someone else will be temporarily affected as well.
