At a special meeting of the city council on Tuesday evening, the decision was made. The construction of a new quay can begin and the quay area will be dredged. The work will start at the turn of the year and be completed by 2027.
Skellefteås stadshusbolag is contributing 1 billion kronor, Skellefteå municipality 330 million kronor and the Swedish Agency for Economic and Regional Growth (Tillväxtverket) 100 million kronor, making a total of 1,430,000,000 kronor.
Despite the fact that preparations for a new quay have been underway since 2017, there was not enough time to make the decision, which is why an extra city council meeting was called. If the decision had not been made before the turn of the year, the co-financing of 100 million kronor from Tillväxtverket would have been lost.
– It was necessary to push the decision through. It is far from satisfactory that a decision on complex issues involving huge investments has to be made under time pressure, says Per Boström (KD).ställande att ett beslut om stora komplexa frågor med enorma investeringsbelopp ska fattas under tidspress, säger Per Boström (KD).
All parties supported the decision on the large investment. However, the Alliance would like to point out that the matter could have been handled better.
– Although we support the decision, we are concerned that the basis for the decision is inadequate when it comes to customer demand, financing and actual costs, says Boström.
– It is important to have a port that can become fossil-free. The expansion also makes it possible for more businesses to locate in Skellefteå, and it is linked to society's need for a transition to electrification and lower climate impact, says Evelina Fahlesson.
– The quay is an important investment. Today's port operations cannot meet future needs, says Lorents Burman (S).
The investment
The project includes construction of a new quay on the north side of Kallholmsfjärden, adjacent to the new storage areas, completion of the storage areas, and dredging of the quay area and fairway. The new quay will be 275 meters long, 28 meters wide and 12.5 meters deep, which is longer, wider and deeper than the existing quays.
