An 18-year-old man is under arrest in connection with an assault and rape that occurred at a pedestrian and bicycle tunnel in Anderstorp, Skellefteå. The suspect has denied any wrongdoing during the initial police interrogation.
Skellefteå police have been investigating a "crime against a person" at one of the Anderstorp tunnels since last week. The incident is believed to have happened on Sunday evening, September 1st, near the Tipshuset.
Police and prosecutors have been cautious about releasing specific details to avoid influencing witnesses. They are seeking information from a man who was seen at the scene with a child in a wheelchair and may have witnessed the incident.
Following a breakthrough in the investigation, the 18-year-old was arrested. A tip led to his identification and subsequent detention.
Prosecutor Petra Hedberg has four weeks until October 4th to file charges. Further investigations, including new interrogations and technical analysis, are ongoing.
Police are still searching for the man who was seen with the child in a wheelchair, as he may have valuable information about the incident. Witnesses who were in the area between 8:45 PM and 9:45 PM on September 1 are urged to contact the police.
Assaults of this nature are thankfully rare in Skellefteå. In the past 20 years, there have been only a few similar incidents reported to the police that warranted in-depth investigation.
