Norran has previously reported that a brand new high school will be built on Norrbölegatan in Skellefteå, on the lot where the former bus garage stands today. A fire broke out in the garage in 2020 which resulted in extensive damage.
In addition to the garage building itself, two other properties on the same site will also be demolished to make way for the new school. According to Stefan Lundström, property manager at Skellefteå municipality, the current tenants will move out in August.
– All tenants are on demolition contracts and understand what that means, he says.
The plan is for the demolition work to begin in the autumn/winter of 2023. Two of the buildings are from the 1950s and the municipality suspects that there were some hazardous substances, such as asbestos, were used in their construction. Samples must be taken before demolition begins.
– The demolition work itself will take a few months. Now we are waiting for the demolition permit and notice to start, then the work will be put out to tender, says Lundström.
The planning for the new high school is still at an early stage, but according to the chairman of the high school board Joakim Dahlgren (S), it will be ready within a few years of the demolition being completed.
– We have been told that the school will be open around 2026 or 2027, he says.
