The battery manufacturer announced this news at a press conference in Canada on Thursday.
The establishment will take place on a 170-hectare site just outside Montreal. Northvolt has received guarantees that cell production will be carried out using 100 percent renewable energy in the form of hydropower.
Northvolt's co-founder, Paolo Cerruti, will lead the project as CEO of Northvolt North America, headquartered in Montreal.
– We see tremendous potential in Northvolt Six, not only to rapidly expand our capacity to bring sustainable batteries to North American markets, but also to accelerate Quebec's role as a key player in the global energy transition," said Cerruti in a press release.
When fully developed, Northvolt Six will have an annual cell production capacity of 60 GWh, which is also the target for Northvolt Ett in Skellefteå. Facilities for cathode active material production and battery recycling will be built next to the factory.
The initial phase of the project will require an investment equivalent of 55 billion kronor and will employ up to 3,000 people, according to Northvolt. Construction of the first 30 GWh is expected to begin at the end of 2023, with production starting in 2026.
According to the press release, this is the largest private investment in Quebec's history and has been developed with the support of the government of Canada and Quebec's local leadership.
