Skellefteå’s number of inhabitants has grown since 2019 and in 2022 the population increased by more than 1,000 people which was the greatest increase in 50 years. The trend seems to be continuing in 2023 as well. New figures from Statistics Sweden show that Skellefteå municipality had 75,087 inhabitants in May this year which is an increase of 1,292 compared to May 2022. That is a population increase of 685 people in the first five months of the year.
Skellefteå is now close to being larger than ever and beating the record number of inhabitants from 1994 which was 75,822 people.
The municipality set a new population goal in 2021. The earlier goal of 80,000 inhabitants in 2030 was scrapped and instead the municipality is now aiming to reach 90,000 inhabitants in 2030 and 100,000 inhabitants in 2040.
