Norran has previously reported that the terminations at Northvolt is starting to have an effect on the population numbers – since autumn close to 800 people have left Skellefteå Municipality.
It was in September that Northvolt announced that 1,600 people would be given their notice as the company had not succeeded in achieving full production of batteries and needed to reduce costs. After negotiations with the unions, 800 workers and 300 officials had to leave the company in Skellefteå.
Many of those affected by terminations came from other countries and had work permits tied to their employment with Northvolt. Statistics from the Migration Agency shows that only around 40 of the 307 people who lost their jobs have found new work and been offered new permits, reports the newspaper Arbetet.
The Migration Agency has initiated 125 withdrawal cases, that is over 125 people risk having their work permits withdrawn and being deported. A further 70 or so people had work permits that had already expired and the Migration Agency is checking whether those people have left the country or not.
Arbetet reports furthermore that around 60 previous Northvolt employees have ongoing cases at the Migration Agency which means that they have sought a new work permit but have not yet received a decision.
Those who lose their work permits are to be deported and generally have four weeks to leave the country.
