Since Kanalskolan was last a school, Jörnköken, which used to cook all Skellefteå's school food, has closed down so the renovated school will need a large kitchen, so chefs can prepare the food from scratch.
Hence the building of a larger extension. The renovation and extension is estimated to cost around 20 million.
No renovations will be made in the rest of the school; the rooms are to be used as they are. However, the painting of classrooms and corridors has already begun.
In the autumn, 380 students from Anderstorp high school, will move in. This will relieve the current overcrowding issue at Anderstorp.
But Kanalskolan will only be a high school for a few years. Then the new high school at Norrböle will be ready, and the plan is for Kanalskolan is to become a primary school instead.
– We are building the bigger kitchen part so that we will be prepared when Kanalskolan becomes a primary school. So the renovation is long-term, says Karin Holmström, the project leader.
