Northvolt death investigation complete – no work link found

The investigation into four deaths among Northvolt employees in Skellefteå is complete. The first two deaths remain unexplained, the third suggests illness, and the fourth was an accident. There is no indication of a connection to the workplace, and the police investigation is therefore closed.

This summer, police started an investigation into possible connections between several deaths in Skellefteå, where Northvolt employees died shortly after work. In three cases, the cause of death could not be determined, and a fourth death was added to the investigation in August.

One focus of the police investigation was the shared workplace, Northvolt Ett in Skellefteå. The police found no links to dangerous substances at work.

Matti Kataja, head of communications at Northvolt, says it feels reassuring today that the police reached the same conclusion as Northvolt did.

– They cannot see any connection between the causes of death and the workplace.

– We hope that this will mean that any rumours and speculations that are still spreading will come to an end.

Kataja continues:

- We are very humble about this. The health and safety of employees is always the most important issue for us.

A thorough analysis was conducted for the third death. The Forensic Medicine Agency has now concluded that the investigation cannot establish a cause of death.

– However, there is nothing to suggest that the cause of death was exposure to any dangerous substance, the police wrote.

Most evidence suggests that the death was natural and caused by illness, although the exact cause could not be determined.

In August, a fourth death occurred when a Northvolt employee drowned at Falkträskbadet. The cause of death has been thoroughly investigated, and the police have concluded it was an accident due to drowning, supported by forensic examination and witness statements.

The police’s overall assessment is that there is no suspicion of criminal activity behind these deaths. The cases will now be handed over to the Skellefteå local police area for routine completion.
