The association that wants to make a difference

Since its inception in 2014, the non-profit organization Expats & Friends in Skellefteå has conducted 76 events with the primary aim of improving integration. On Friday, the event called Springboard focused on matching companies' needs for skilled employees with career opportunities for newcomers.

Mian Hassan Raza, who has been on the board of Expats & Friends for a month, is pursuing a master's degree in information security at Luleå University of Technology in Skellefteå.

– When I arrived here in 2021, I was a pretty shy guy, and through Expats & Friends, I made friends and received help with most things about how things work here in Skellefteå. For example, I got help with advice on how to survive the winter, he says.

At an event organized by the association, he connected with people working at the company Nuiteq.

– And I had an internship there.

Several similar examples of how Expats & Friends serves as a meeting place that leads to friendships and work were presented during the day, which, in addition to lectures, also included a workshop.

– Everyone craves community. We want to be the difference between staying here and giving up, says Marina Georgescu, who also serves on the board of Expats & Friends.

Sanna Bäckström, Communications Manager at Northvolt Ett, was one of the speakers during the day.

– It's important that we're proactive in the recruitment process and try to help so that spouses and partners can also find work here," she says.

Also present was Norran's English editor, Paul Connolly, who talked about Norran's new sub-site, norran/english, where one can find a wealth of news and reports in English.

The next event that Expats & Friends will organize is the Latin Party at Folkparken in Skellefteå on May 26th.
