Northvolt unveils noise battle plan

Following complaints from local residents, Northvolt received an order from Länstyrelsen Västerbotten in late 2023 to investigate noise levels at the Skellefteå plant. The results have now been published.

Local residents have complained about noise from Northvolt One. A noise analysis has now been carried out.

The study, which is currently in the hands of Länstyrelsen, has been carried out by a prominent engineering company commissioned by Northvolt. It provides insight into the current state of the factory, especially the initial phase with two production blocks of four lines each, which are now in full operation.

The noise investigation focused primarily on properties in Bergsbyn, with one property in Tuvan also included.

To identify the sources of noise exceeding limits, the consultant analyzed two checkpoints near residential areas adjacent to the operating area. It was found that the infringements occurred during evenings and nights.

Measurements taken revealed that there were no exceedances in Bergsbyn during the day. However, in the evening, 42 properties experienced an exceedance and at night, over 100 properties were affected. Night-time noise levels were also found to be excessive at the Tuvan property.

Further investigation identified the specific chemical process used in the manufacturing process as the source of the noise.

These are noise barriers erected by Northvolt in 2023. The new research is based on measurements taken in January 2024.

In their response to Länstyrelsen, Northvolt acknowledges the need to take corrective action to mitigate the disturbance. They emphasize that, based on the current scenario, they can only carry out the specific process during the day, as during the evening and night it results in exceeding the noise limits specified in their environmental permit.
