Baby's birth adds sparkle to E4 traffic

On Wednesday, Mikaela and Alexander Ångman were on their way to the maternity ward in Skellefteå when they got stuck in a traffic jam. They couldn't make it to the hospital and Mikaela ended up giving birth in the car. "Just as the ambulance arrived, I saw a bit of the baby's head," says father Alexander.

On Wednesday, there was a major incident on the E4 highway just south of Skellefteå. An ambulance received a police escort to the scene.

The couple, who live in Bureå, had already been to the maternity ward in the morning.

– But in the afternoon they sent us home. I was three to four centimeters dilated, but there was a lack of space on the ward, so the staff told us to go home and wait, says Mikaela.

They went to Alexander's parents, who also live in Bureå.

– We went there for dinner. But I couldn't eat, I was in so much pain, said Mikaela.

They decided to go back to the maternity ward, and Mikaela, Alexander, and Alexander's father got into the car and drove to Skellefteå. About a kilometer from Tjärn, they encountered long queues.

The reason for the tailback was a stuck truck.

– Just when I felt the urge to push, we saw that there was a traffic jam. I just thought, 'Oh no,' Mikaela said.

There were long lines on the E4 around 18:00 on Wednesday. According to one person Norran spoke to, traffic was at a standstill for over an hour and a half.

It was then that Alexander's father realized they needed to call an ambulance. An ambulance was dispatched, but the traffic and weather conditions made it a challenge. The exact time it took for the ambulance to arrive is unknown to the couple, but they believe it was about 25 minutes. By that time, the birth had already begun.

– I saw a little bit of the baby's head as the paramedics arrived, Alexander said.

– It was snowing on my knees at the same time as I was giving birth, said Mikaela.

They were taken by ambulance to Skellefteå hospital, again with the help of the police.

– The E4 was closed in the southbound direction so that the ambulance could drive in the opposite lane, says Alexander.

The birth went well, and now the couple has welcomed their second child - a little girl.

– It went really well. I feel good and the baby's doing well, Mikaela said.

Alexander added: "I'm fine too, although I'm a bit shaken.

Mikaela said she was worried at one point.

– I thought, 'No, am I going to have to have the baby here?' But in the end, everything turned out fine.

It was a dramatic birth for Mikaela and Alexander Ångman. Here is a picture from their wedding last summer.

The couple would like to thank the police, the paramedics, and the people in the tailback.

– The paramedics and the police were really great. And the people in the traffic jam also came and asked if they could help; it was amazing.

What will the girl's name be?

– It's not decided yet.
