On one sunny summer day, Norran’s reporter Alva Kledzik went for a bike ride around Skellefteå’s cafés where she checked what all establishments charged for a cup of coffee with a chocolate ball and a cinnamon bun.
After Alva’s bike ride we have compiled the data and found out what it would cost to order a cup of java and these two sweet delights. Our investigation shows that Ainas, Café på bit and Stigs konditori have the cheapest cup of coffee. If you have an urge for a cup of coffee with a chocolate ball and a cinnamon bun, where will you spend the least money?
You can sit down for a fika at Kanel in central Skellefteå for 67 kronor. Just a weak stone’s throw from there you will find Espresso House that leaves you with a receipt with the highest amount, 116 kronor.
Gittan Smedh, who now offers the cheapest fika in the town centre, fires off a big smile when she hears the result of the investigation:
– Oh, how fun, I’m really happy! This is my life.
Is it a conscious choice to have such low prices?
– Absolutely! I have a lot of customers who are middle-aged and elderly and I want everyone to be able to have a fika. The guests do say that it’s very cheap here, especially the Norwegians, for them it’s particularly cheap, “Kempe billigt!” they say.
What are your thoughts on the pricing?
– I’m not making a great profit but that doesn’t matter. I have enough staff and good cakes and biscuits. I’m here ten hours a day because I enjoy it but of course, if I had been younger I’d probably invested more but I’m over 75 and I don’t see that I have anything special to save up for? If I change the chairs, tables and tablecloths then that will be a cost for my guests. I make an effort to ensure that prices don’t go up for their sake.
