In addition to Olaf Scholz, other leading German politicians and the management of Northvolt were also present at the start of construction
– It feels fantastic to get started with this construction project. We are deeply grateful for the support from customers, investors and public stakeholders in creating this flagship project for the global climate transition. Heide feels like a home to us, says Northvolt CEO Peter Carlsson in a press release.
Northvolt will use wind power from a wind farm in the region to power the factory.
Olaf Scholz notes that investments of this kind are strategically important for Germany and for Europe.
– It is good news for our entire country that battery cells produced in a climate-friendly way will be manufactured here for one million cars per year in the future, he comments on Northvolt's investment.
Recruitment of employees for the factory has already started, and a survey shows that 80 percent of the local population are positive about the project.
– It is unprecedented for a large-scale industrial project on 110 hectares to receive such strong support from the local population, says Christofer Haux, CEO of Northvolt Germany.
