New Year's Eve brought the police in Västerbotten more cases than an average weekend night. Most of them were related to drunkenness, according to the police's website. A total of 20 people from Västerbotten were taken into custody under the Intoxicated Persons Act.
In Skellefteå, three people were taken into custody, one of whom was placed in a police cell and two of whom were given medical care.
Around half past five in the morning, the police received a tip about a car swerving on the E4 highway near Solbacken. The police responded and found the vehicle. The driver, a man, tested positive on the police's screening device and was taken in for further tests.
The man is suspected of aggravated drunk driving and was taken into custody.
In Umeå, eight drunk people were taken to the cells and five were given medical care. In Hemavan, four people were taken into custody and two people were tested for suspected drug-taking.
Several assaults were reported to the police, including incidents in Robertsfors and Umeå. In addition, a report of vandalism was filed after a window was smashed during a rowdy party in the center of Umeå.
Västerbotten police also removed several people from the city centers of Skellefteå, Umeå and Lycksele during the night.
No serious accidents or crimes were reported during the first hours of the year, and the night was described as quiet from a law enforcement perspective.
