While employees acknowledge the possibility of achieving these goals, they express concerns about the timeline.

All expansion plans for the Skellefteå factory have been halted, and the company is now focused on increasing production at existing facilities.

According to the company, production has tripled since the beginning of the year, with a recent record of 60,000 battery cells produced in a single week.

Northvolt has set a new target of producing 100,000 cells per week by the end of the year.

In an internal announcement, CEO Peter Carlsson emphasized the importance of maintaining focus and prioritizing tasks related to product delivery.

– Every day will be crucial, he said in a recording obtained by Norran.

However, several employees interviewed by Norran highlighted production challenges, including machine malfunctions.

– Repairing machines can be time-consuming, said one employee.

Another employee expressed skepticism about achieving the 100,000-cell target quickly.

Matti Kataja, communications manager, acknowledged the ambitious nature of the goal.

– Achieving this target requires a continuous operational process involving daily follow-ups and targeted improvements to our processes and volumes. All departments and specialist teams are focused on optimizing production at every stage.

Northvolt production

Three key points about Northvolt's production:

Production challenges: Northvolt has faced difficulties in establishing large-scale production in Skellefteå. These issues reportedly contributed to BMW's cancellation of a €2 billion order last summer. Scania, another part-owner of Northvolt, has also been impacted, with CEO Christian Levin acknowledging delays in their electrification plans due to delivery problems. Despite these challenges, Scania remains supportive of Northvolt.

Revised production goals: Northvolt has revised its production targets, aiming to reach 16 GWh by 2026. This represents a reduction from the previous goal of 60 GWh.

Increased focus on core business: Northvolt has announced a shift in focus to prioritize production and fulfill commitments to existing automotive customers. CEO Peter Carlsson emphasized the need for concentrated effort and investment in the core business.
