Due to the national Planning and Building Act of 2020, each municipality needs to devise new planning strategies.

It had already been decided that Skellefteå should aim for 90,000 inhabitants by 2030 and 100,000 inhabitants by 2040.

It is now proposed that the municipality should be designed for 125,000 inhabitants in 2050.

The new targets will affect how much land is allocated for housing, industrial areas, trade, schools, health care, social care, streets, cycle paths, parks and public transport.

– There are great opportunities for urban densification, says Lorents Burman (S), chair of the municipal council.
