Norran has been in contact with the man's wife. She mentioned that she received the news of his death last Wednesday.
– It was someone in Ukraine who called and told me he was dead.
The man had a background as a hunter and went to Ukraine in April last year. He joined a volunteer unit and had been fighting on the side of the Ukrainians ever since.
– He had a strong sense of justice and wanted to go and help. His motivation was to make a difference, said the man's wife.
She doesn't know the exact circumstances of his death, but according to the information she received, he died last Tuesday after fighting in the Donetsk region, in the eastern part of the country.
– My understanding is that he was injured so badly that he succumbed to his injuries, she said.
She described it as terrible news to receive.
– It was horrible.
Last Friday, she informed the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (UD) what had happened. UD has since confirmed to several media outlets that a Swedish man in his forties, originally from Norrland, died in Ukraine.
Efforts are now being made to repatriate his body.
– As far as I know, he is currently in Kiev. It will take about two weeks to bring him home.
She also mentioned that she and her family want to grieve in peace.
– It's very difficult at the moment, as you can imagine.
