Skellefteå ready to invest in new airport terminal

Over a year after a proposal for Skellefteå Airport's nationalization emerged, the local municipality remains committed to its development. Municipal councilor Lorents Burman (S) has announced the municipality's readiness to invest in a new terminal, regardless of the ongoing discussions about the airport's ownership. "The project would involve an investment of 600 million to 800 million kronor," Burman told Norran.

This is what a picture from the preliminary study of the new terminal looked like, as reported by Norran in the spring of 2023.

The proposal for Skellefteå's nationalization was presented by government investigator Peter Norman in February 2023. Norman's inquiry aimed to ensure basic accessibility for citizens and businesses through a network of state-owned airports. Skellefteå was proposed to become Swedavia's eleventh airport, with negotiations urged between the state and the municipality.

Skellefteå Airport is still waiting to hear if it will be nationalized.

Despite repeated inquiries, Burman states that "nothing" has progressed on the issue since the proposal. He emphasizes the need for a clear decision to prevent stagnation and advocate for airport development, including a new terminal.

The municipality's willingness to invest hinges on a long-term agreement with shared ownership responsibility.

However, the fate of Skellefteå Airport's ownership still remains uncertain a year on from Norman's recommendation.
