Vy to halt Norrland night train operations

Due to a disagreement with Trafikverket (Swedish Transport Administration) regarding the sharing of additional costs for the night train service to and from upper Norrland, the Vy train company has announced it will cease operating the line after December 2024.

Vy trains operates night trains using locomotives and carriages owned by Trafikverket. However, the condition of the vehicles has fallen below expectations, resulting in higher operating costs than Vy anticipated.

In a press release, the train company explained that they were unable to reach an agreement with Trafikverket regarding how to share these additional expenses. Consequently, both parties have decided not to extend the current contract.

Vy will continue to operate the night trains as scheduled until December 14, 2024, when the existing agreement expires. After that, the Swedish Transport Administration will initiate a new procurement process to find a new operator. Previously, SJ operated these night trains all the way to Narvik, but Vy won the bid in 2020.
