Their new single "Under someone new", is an early contender for song of the year.
– We were completely in love with the song and with each other, says Bryant.
When promo director Jonas Åkerlund came on board – and the envisioned music video became a live musical drama – the idea of a constructing a spectacle began to take hold. Miriam Bryant and Veronica Maggio's tour will be something out of the ordinary.
– This is going to be so much fun. We are like two only children whose families have moved in together, and now we have all my toys and all Miriam's toys to play with, says Maggio.
The duo is secretive about what exactly awaits the audience. But the musical drama – which was streamed on Vierlive on Friday, February 10 – may provide a taste. The artists played each other, dressed up, danced, fought – and made out.
– We had a little Britney and Madonna moment, says Bryant, referring to Britney Spears and Madonna sharing a kiss during the opening performance of the MTV Video Music Awards in 2003.
Not the same old thing
The visuals of the video set the tone for the tour of three-hour gigs, which premieres in Gothenburg on July 29.
– I have been playing gigs for so many years now. And I have begun to yearn for a new expression and to try something different. Now we will challenge each other to do things that none of us have done before on stage. This is really not the same old thing, says Maggio.
– We will have a lot of fun on stage and will work with, among other things, a very talented illustrator. We're really going for it, says Bryant.
–Veronica is an institution in Sweden. She has an iconic voice that you recognize immediately. We both stand out vocally, but in completely different ways, says Bryant.
– We like the same things; real musicians and organic productions, but we have very different song catalogs. Miriam can do more difficult things with her voice and she sings so indescribably cleanly. I'm more of a "one-trick pony", says Maggio.
Something that really unites the artists is their love of playing live. Both want to be authentic and unique when they meet the public.
– I actually think we're the only ones in Sweden who don't use autotune live, right? says Veronica Maggio, referring to a software tool that 'corrects' out-of-tune voices.
A real live party
The first time they met was at P3 Guld 2013 – immortalized with a selfie that can still be seen on Miriam Bryant's sister's phone to this day. But it took until 2019 before they worked together and wrote the songs for Bryant's EP "Mi amor", which included the smash hit "Du med dig" and "Blåmarkshårt" which was guested on by, among others, Cherrie.
– We will write more together. But if there will be more duets, we'll see. We found each other in the studio and clicked. And that doesn't happen often, says Bryant, and adds that the audience can expect a full evening.
– It will be a real live party, says Bryant.
Tickets for the Skellefteå show will be available here from 10am on Friday, February 17
