Two younger men were arrested by the police around 1:30 pm on Tuesday. Following an interrogation later that day, prosecutor Linnea Hedström, who leads the investigation, decided to keep the men in custody. They are currently being held in the detention center at the police station in Umeå.
David Helgesson, head of the serious crime department at the Västerbotten police, confirms that the investigation into the murder is now expanding.
– On Tuesday, initial interrogations were conducted with the two men. I cannot comment on what was said during these interrogations. They will next be interrogated with their defense counsel, who is currently being appointed, he says.
In early April, the Skellefteå District Court decided on a so-called gag order during a remand hearing. A gag order prohibits anyone who has participated in a court hearing or police interrogation from disclosing what was said during the hearing or interrogation.
Even under protection of whistleblower laws, the parties involved are not allowed to disclose any confidential information about the investigation, for example to a journalist. Breaking this rule can result in fines.
The fact that two people have now been arrested clearly indicates why the gag order was imposed, to prevent any leaks about the ongoing investigation.
Is this the reason for the gag order?
"You can draw your own conclusions, and you should direct those kinds of questions to the prosecutor," Helgesson replies.
