A woman in her 90s who went missing in Lövånger has been found dead after a large search operation was launched and police appealed for information and possible sightings.

The police were contacted on Wednesday morning regarding a missing woman in her 90s in Lövånger.

"The last contact with the woman was on Tuesday afternoon at 4:30 pm. She was in the woods picking berries. The woman usually picks berries at Kyrksjön in Lövånger, near a fishing cabin," the police wrote on their website.

The police have provided a description of the woman:

"She is about 157 centimetres tall and weighs about 50 kilograms. The woman has gray hair. It is unclear what clothing she is wearing. She is said to have gone into the woods on a red/pink bicycle with a basket on the rack."

A massive search operation is underway, including police dog patrols. "Helicopters and drones will also be used. Mountain rescue teams will also be involved," police said.

Police are appealing to the public for information and any possible sightings regarding both the woman and her bicycle. "If you have any ongoing observations, please call 112; other information can be given to the police on 114 14," police said.

Update 10:53 am:

Police spokeswoman Maria Linné said the search began Wednesday evening.

– An intensive search was launched shortly after we received information about the missing person. A close search involves checking her residence and the immediate surroundings.

During the night, the duty officer decided to launch a larger search operation.

– So now a larger search operation is underway.

Drones are now searching the area around Kyrksjön.

Update 12:13 PM:

A bicycle matching the police description has been found, but it is unclear if it belongs to the missing woman.

Norran reporter Melker Westerberg is at the meeting point at the AIK sports ground in Lövånger-Uttersjöbäcken.

– There are a lot of police here. It's hard to say how many; right next to me there are three police cars, quite a few police officers and some dog handlers. It's a very large police operation. Mountain rescuers are also present, he said.

Update 13.13:

The woman has been found in a clearing by a police drone operator. The bicycle found belonged to the woman.

–They found her severely hypothermic and called an ambulance. But her life could not be saved, says Simon Hiltula, police officer and responsible for the operation in Lövånger.

Next of kin have been notified. Up to 50 police officers participated in the search operation.

– We do not suspect any crime.
