In 2011, a group of Skellefteå musicians started a project to pay tribute to The Band and 'The Last Waltz'. Music that has its roots in folk music, blues and country.
"Robbie, you are missed by the entire music world and also by a group of Skellefteå musicians," writes Thomas Lindgren in a press release.
In 2015, the band performed two sold-out shows at Södra Teatern in Stockholm with guest artists such as Magnus Carlson, Weeping Willows, Mats Ronander, Hasse Olsson, Micke Leijnegard, Pär Wiksten, Anders ”Molle” Molin, and Skelleftehamn's own country queen, Karin Risberg.
The concert was filmed by Janne Wännström, Voicemedia, and premiered at Folket Hus in Skelleftehamn in May 2015. Now, eight years later, the film is being shown again as a tribute from Skellefteå musicians to the late Robbie Robertson.
The Band
The Band, then known as The Hawks, gained prominence in the mid-1960s when they, along with Ronnie Hawkins, served as Bob Dylan's touring band. After leaving Dylan and changing their name to The Band, the group released several acclaimed albums, including the classic 'Music from Big Pink.'
The collaboration with Dylan recurred several times over the years. In 1974, The Band played with Dylan during the sold-out tour and the album 'Planet Waves.'
After his time with The Band, Robertson worked extensively as a composer and producer, including on films such as 'Gangs of New York,' 'The Departed,' 'The Wolf of Wall Street,' and 'The Irishman.'
The Band embarked on their farewell tour in 1976, which also resulted in the concert film 'The Last Waltz,' directed by Martin Scorsese.
