When the TV series "Björnstad" aired on HBO two years ago, young people from Norrbotten were showcased on screens around the world, and in 2024, they will have their chance to shine once more.
The film "Stöld," based on Ann-Helén Laestadius's book, has begun shooting in Vittangi, where a miniature Jokkmokk market has been set up, providing significant exposure for many Norrbotten residents.
To create a realistic world, individuals with Sami backgrounds and reindeer herding expertise have been brought on board.
Netflix has revealed that the cast includes Ida Persson Labba (featured in the documentary "Tystnaden i Sápmi"), politician Pávva Pittja (who also appeared in "Midnattssol"), artist Ingahilda Tapio, and yoiker Simon Issát Marainen. Lars-Ánte Wasara and Magnus Kuhmunen are also part of the ensemble.
"We are in the midst of production right now. We've had exciting and demanding days in minus 35-degree temperatures. We love snow. I am so impressed and proud of the entire cast and crew – especially the Sami people. It's also incredibly beautiful to be able to speak my own language, which is Sami, on set," says director Elle Márjá Eira in a statement from Netflix.
The film is slated for a global premiere sometime in 2024, with Norwegian Elin Oskal making her acting debut in the lead role as Elsa. Alongside her is Martin Wallström (known for "Beck" and "Mr. Robot").
– "It's incredibly exciting to get to know the film industry from the inside – I've always been curious about it. I'm so grateful to be a part of this," Elsa tells Netflix.
