Skellefteå is known for its gentle pace of life. But in April, I noticed an unusual buzz around the city. At first, I thought it might be due to a concert by a famous band. Later, I realized the excitement was for the local ice hockey team, Skellefteå AIK.
Ice hockey has a huge following in Skellefteå, and this year was special – the local team had made it to the semifinals of the biggest tournament in Swedish ice hockey. Remarkably, AIK had been in the final eight times over the past 13 years, winning it twice, the last time in 2014.
My husband and I are big sports fans, having grown up watching cricket in our home country. Coincidentally, April and May are the months when the IPL, India’s popular cricket league, takes place. We were feeling down about missing out on those matches. So, discovering ice hockey in Skellefteå was exciting. We were late to the party, though, and missed out on tickets for the semifinals.
But as soon as we heard that Skellefteå AIK had made it to the finals, we started searching for tickets every day. We finally managed to get tickets for one of the play-off matches. Ice hockey was entirely new to us. We didn’t even know how many players were on a team, but we couldn’t pass up the chance to cheer for our new home team.
We arrived two hours before the game, only to find many fans already there. Almost everyone was wearing Skellefteå jerseys or carrying team flags.
We had plenty of time to explore the arena and were lucky enough to catch the team during their warm-up session. Fans were taking pictures and videos of the players as they zipped across the ice, and we struck up conversations with locals, who gave us the run-down on the team, the captain, who to watch out for, and the finer points of the game. Their passion was contagious, and we felt immersed in the whole occasion.
As the match approached, the stadium filled up. The whole arena, aside from a small enclosure for the opposing team’s fans, was a sea of Skellefteå yellow and black. When the opposing players from Rögle took the field, the crowd grew restless, waiting impatiently for the home team. Then, one by one, the Skellefteå AIK players entered the field through a ring of fireworks – it really was a spectacular sight.
The game kicked off, and it became more intense with each passing minute. We quickly realized how competitive and aggressive ice hockey is. The crowd cheered for every shot by the home team, and both teams fought hard, and it was a very close, low-scoring game. We were in awe of the energy in the arena.
The Skellefteå fans were singing, cheering, clapping, and doing everything they could to support their team. The atmosphere was electric.
This was the second match of the finals, and Skellefteå AIK had already won the first. We were hoping to witness another victory. Unfortunately, the home team lost that night, but it was a tight game, Rögle winning 1-0.
Despite the loss, our first ice hockey experience was incredible. Skellefteå AIK went on to win the next three matches and lifted the trophy, becoming SHL champions for the fourth time.
We were thrilled that in our first year in Skellefteå, we saw the home team’s triumph and joined the city in celebration. I’m happy to have found a new sport to follow and a new favorite team to cheer for every season.
