"This is why Skellefteå is one of the world's 50 greatest places"

It's almost impossible to remember summer's warmth in the middle of freezing January.

I had high expectations for summer in Skellefteå. Friends and locals had described Skellefteå’s summer beauty, fuelling my anticipation. The days grew longer and brighter, bringing more people out into the streets.

Not only did the local community come alive, but we also noticed an influx of visitors. Tourists arrived to enjoy Skellefteå’s stunning landscapes and relax by the river. For the first time, we experienced some traffic on the roads—a rare sight in winter. Restaurants were bustling as people flocked outdoors to savour the sunshine.

The beach at Boviken and the riverside near the town centre quickly became our favourite spots. Boviken, less crowded than other areas, offered a scenic retreat with play areas for kids and fireplaces for barbecues. I was tempted to take a dip myself, but the water was still too cold for me, even in summer.

I was captivated by the riot of colours that replaced winter’s stark palette. One of the most extraordinary experiences was the midnight sun. The sun barely set, disappearing for only a few hours each night. While this endless daylight was refreshing, it made it easy to lose track of time. Children played outside well past 10 pm, adding to the lively summer atmosphere.

While Skellefteå itself was enchanting, we also discovered the charm of nearby Kåge during summer. Its walking paths wound through picturesque landscapes, charming homes, and riverside stretches.

Summer also brought a host of events to Skellefteå. Sara kulturhus hosted arts and music performances, while the midsummer celebration near Bonnstan drew one of the city’s largest gatherings.

Every moment felt special. As a newcomer this vibrant festival was both unique and exhilarating. We also discovered local farms that opened in summer, selling fresh produce, home-made cheese, and meat. Some even allowed children to interact with farm animals, adding a wholesome touch to the season.

Skellefteå’s summer was a revelation. We uncovered the city’s full beauty, explored new places, attended lively events, and met many people. While winter had its own allure, the stark seasonal contrast made us appreciate summer even more.

I realised that this blend of natural beauty, distinct experiences, and warm community spirit is what earned Skellefteå its reputation as one of Time Magazine’s 50 greatest places.
