Skellefteå Kraft to build factory for sustainable aviation fuel

Skellefteå Kraft, in partnership with the global aviation fuel company Skynrg, has been exploring the feasibility of establishing a large-scale sustainable aviation fuel factory at Näsudden in Skelleftehamn. This billion-dollar project is expected to create approximately 100 new jobs.

"This is in line with our vision to promote renewable energy and contribute to the green transition and a fossil-free society," says Joachim Nordin.

Under the project name SkyKraft, the companies are now advancing their plans to construct a facility that will produce electrofuel for aviation, known as esaf, from biogenic carbon dioxide and renewable hydrogen.

"This initiative aligns with our vision of promoting renewable energy and contributing to the green transition and a fossil-free society, stated Joachim Nordin, CEO of Skellefteå Kraft, in a press release.

The proposed industry would be a pioneer in its field and could significantly contribute to decarbonizing air travel in Sweden, the EU, and globally.

The plan is for the aviation fuel factory to be built here at Näsudden.

Once fully operational, the factory in Skelleftehamn could produce 100,000 tons of aviation fuel per year. That’s roughly the amount needed for 60,000 people to fly around the world.

– We are fully committed to making this project a reality, comments Philippe Lacamp, CEO of Skynrg.

The project has been granted land allocation at Näsudden in Skelleftehamn. The ambition is for the investigation to lead to a full-scale investment, though no decision has been made yet, and close dialogue with stakeholders is ongoing. The goal is to begin construction in 2027.
