Northvolt job cuts but no shortage of opportunities in Skellefteå

Arbetsförmedlingen's office in Skellefteå, dedicated to supporting large corporate establishments in Norrbotten and Västerbotten, is facing a new challenge. In addition to its ongoing work on skills provision, the office is now tasked with helping laid-off employees from Northvolt find new jobs in the region.

Established in September 2023, the Skellefteå office focuses on "skills provision for large corporate establishments and business expansions related to green jobs." Its primary responsibilities include strategic collaboration, innovative working methods to enhance skills provision, and effective information dissemination to address skills needs.

Led by Ida Rönnblom, the office is actively responding to Northvolt's major layoffs. The team is diligently assessing job opportunities for affected employees and developing plans to assist them in their job search.

1,000 people will lose their job at Northvolt.

– Two of us are working closely with the local agency on this. While we don't yet have specific details about the individuals affected, we're prepared to take immediate action once that information becomes available.

Rönnblom is optimistic about the job market in Skellefteå:

– We've had a labor shortage for years, both locally and regionally. There should be plenty of suitable positions for those leaving Northvolt.

Indeed, Skellefteå has experienced a shortage of workers since March 2022, with more available positions than jobseekers. As of Friday, the Job Bank listed 1,794 vacancies.

We have had a labor shortage for several years, both in Skellefteå and across the entire region, says Ida Rönnblom.

– The manufacturing and transportation industries have a significant number of job openings, says Ida.

Additionally, the municipality and region are also in need of staff in healthcare and social services.
