Documents seen by Ekot show that negotiations are underway to sell Northvolt Labs, the high-tech development arm of the bankrupt battery manufacturer Northvolt. The documents state that there is “an interested buyer,” though the potential purchaser is not named.
Northvolt Labs in Västerås has been described as a cutting-edge centre for the development of future battery technologies. It is seen as a valuable asset, particularly due to the research and innovation that has taken place there.
Since Northvolt declared bankruptcy, the Västerås centre has gone from around 830 employees to just over 230, as nearly 600 staff were let go.
A potential sale of the development site is just one of several issues currently on the table for the bankruptcy trustee, who is overseeing the company’s assets.
In Skellefteå, production continues at Northvolt’s large battery factory while efforts are ongoing to find a new owner. Batteries produced there are currently being delivered to truck manufacturer Scania.
It is still unclear whether parts of Northvolt’s operations could be sold together to a single buyer. The bankruptcy trustee has not responded to requests for comment.
