Around 4.30pm on Thursday, nearly 20 fire and rescue units were called to a two-storey parking garage in the Kallkällan area of Luleå, according to SVT Norrbotten. Ambulance and police services also responded.
A public warning was issued urging people to stay indoors and close doors, windows and ventilation.
An estimated 80–90 cars were damaged, but no injuries have been reported, SVT writes.
Police are investigating the incident as suspected arson, but no suspect has been identified, police spokesperson Elisabeth Glaas told the TV channel.
Speaking to NSD, Maria Lindvall was one of those who lost her car in the fire. As she walked toward the garage to collect it, she saw the thick column of smoke and realised her car had been destroyed.
– When I saw the flames, I was in no doubt. I went back afterward, and there was nothing left of the car, she told NSD.
She told the newspaper that she relies on the car to manage her daily life, but remains hopeful after speaking with her insurance company.
– In the end, it’s just material things, she said.
