Brazil continues to suffer devastating floods

Heavy rains lashing Brazil's Rio Grande do Sul state have caused the death toll to climb to 143, according to the local civil defense agency on Sunday.

This marks a rise from 136 fatalities reported the previous day. The relentless downpour continues to worsen the situation, with rising river levels and 125 people still missing.

Weather service Metsul has designated the situation as "extremely worrying."

In response to the crisis, the government announced an emergency spending package of approximately 12.1 billion reais (24 billion kronor) on Saturday evening. 

This funding aims to address the needs of the over 538,000 people displaced within the state, which has a total population of around 10.9 million.
