Today is the last day to file tax returns in Sweden, with a deadline of midnight. Those who file on paper can also drop off their returns at the designated tax office box. For individuals who are struggling to complete their returns by the deadline, the Swedish Tax Agency (Skatteverket) is offering an extension until May 16th.
– If you are already having trouble completing your returns, request an extension. You can contact the Swedish Tax Agency directly or apply for an extension on their website, says Alem Resulovic, section chief at the agency.
Extensions can be granted over the phone or through the website using a bank ID. Those who request an extension will be exempt from late filing penalties.
However, if more time is needed beyond May 16th, a request must be submitted to the agency and a valid reason provided. Failure to request an extension or late submission of returns will incur a penalty of 1,250 kronor. Multiple late filing penalties can be imposed.
Exceptions to the extension and late filing penalty rules exist for individuals over 65 years of age who do not work or run a business full-time.
As the deadline looms, many individuals are contacting the Swedish Tax Agency for assistance.
– Many have already filed their returns, but we expect a surge of calls on the last day. We have extra staff on hand to handle the volume, notes Resulovic.
