Fire and fury: Byske suspect doesn't go quietly

The suspected arsonist had just been told he would be detained for last week's arson drama in Byske. Chaos ensued as the 30-year-old refused to accept the news. The police ended up using pepper spray and handcuffs to subdue the man.

Police, firefighters and ambulances were called to an apartment building in Byske late last Thursday night.

Suspicion quickly turned to a 30-year-old man. He was arrested shortly after the incident on suspicion of arson, attempted grievous bodily harm and aggravated criminal threats.

The last two charges relate to the use of weapons in connection with the alleged crimes.

Skebo told Norran on Friday that the arson caused extensive damage.

The 30-year-old man has been in custody at Skellefteå police station since Friday night. The man was at times very aggressive and agitated.

The suspect was arrested on the same day, and the police carried out a number of investigative measures, including a technical examination of the scene of the fire and the crime, interrogations and door-to-door canvassing in the area.

Prosecutor Stina Stener cited three reasons for requesting the man's detention: the risk that he would obstruct the investigation if released, the possibility of him committing new crimes, and the high minimum sentence for arson (two years).

The remand hearing began at 4 pm on Monday at Skellefteå District Court. The suspect and his lawyer Linda Sundlöf participated via videolink from a room at Skellefteå police station. Prosecutor Stina Stener was also present via video link from Umeå.

It quickly became apparent that the suspect was not happy with the proceedings. He interrupted the prosecution several times until the presiding judge had to tell the man to 'shut up'.

Stina Stener, prosecutor in Umeå, participated in Monday afternoon's detention hearing. The case has now been taken over by colleague Edvard Breitholtz, who has been appointed as the head of the preliminary investigation.

– I'm not staying here anymore! I don't want a lawyer; I want to be my own lawyer, the 30-year-old shouted angrily.

Lawyer Linda Sundlöf tried to calm her client down. She pointed out that it would be his turn to speak at a later stage in the proceedings, after the public prosecutor had summarized the charges against him.

The detention hearing then continued behind closed doors for just over an hour.

After that, the court announced that the suspect was likely to be charged with arson and attempted grievous bodily harm, and would have to be remanded in custody (the charge of making serious illegal threats was not included in the detention request, but the man is also being investigated for that charge).

At that point, the suspect became very upset.

Skellefteå police officers were then forced to subdue the man with pepper spray and handcuffs due to his behavior.

The district court ruled that the suspect must undergo a so-called P7 examination to investigate possible suspicions of a serious mental disorder.
