As the weather becomes more extreme you may be more inclined to want to take a quick dip while travelling. What is more atmospheric than looking at the view and houses around a lake while you are floating in it? A bag with swimwear and a towel should be in every experienced traveller’s hand luggage nowadays.
If you see a bathing place where someone is swimming then that is a signal that you can get in as well. Of course it may feel a bit spooky to jump into a dark lake where you cannot see the bottom but those coming out of the water can answer your questions about stones, mud and other things you may want to know before taking the plunge.
Bygdeträsket is the largest lake in Skellefteå municipality with a surface of 29.3 square kilometres. On a warm day there is probably swimming happening in many places.
One of the beaches with the promising name Storsand is located a kilometre or so outside of Bygdsiljum. It is signposted from the road coming from Burträsk and when you come to a Y junction you turn left.
A large party sat down on blankets and towels have come from Umeå and Skellefteå. The common denominator is lake Korssjön which is ten kilometres away in the direction of Flarken.
– That lake is not very swimmable so we go to other beaches when we want to go swimming, says Solveig Gustavsson.
Not everyone in the party has been in the water I am told as it is considered to be too cold.
– It’s a large lake and it takes time to warm up. The air needs to be warm, then it feels good to cool off here, says Solveig.
One advantage with this lake is that it is very shallow.
– It’s good for families with small children, says Petra Tkachenko Widmark from Skellefteå whose children Dima and Alina are splashing around in the water.
– This is our paradise, she says when the couple comes out of the water after a dip.
