On Sunday, October 22, the Mjötjärns hunting team in Bygdsiljum organized a try-out day for young people interested in moose hunting, with the aim of attracting more enthusiasts to the sport. Among the participants was 12-year-old Vendela Jonsson, who attended the event with her father.
What happened next?
– We were hunting moose and had released the dog, which ran about 200 meters before it started barking. That's when we decided to sneak over and see what it was. At first we thought it might be a moose, of course, she said.
They noticed the dog barking up a tree. What they first thought was a moose turned out to be something else entirely. Vendela thought it might be a squirrel, but as her father approached the tree, the entire top of the spruce began to move. They realized the animal had to be bigger than a squirrel.
– I looked at the range finder, and it was 29 meters away from us. When it heard us, it probably got scared and climbed down, causing the tree to sway. Then, as it ran away, we could hear the sound of bear paws 'baboom baboom.' The ground was trembling.
While Vendela has hunted several times before with her father, she had never seen a bear before.
How did it feel?
It was exciting. It feels cool because I'm not very old. My dad has been hunting for several years and has never seen a bear in real life, but now both my dad and I saw one on the same day.
