A folk music celebration for the whole family

It is soon time for the 2023 edition of Burträsksvängen featuring different types of folk music. Burträsk is transformed into a musical landscape filled with marching tunes and wedding marches. There will be key harp and fiddle players in every corner.

Last year’s edition of Bursträsksvängen offered sun, folk music and dancing.

Bursträsksvängen started almost 50 years ago. Since then, many visitors and musicians have come to dance the mazurka, waltz, schottische, hambo and polka. Several of the people attending are frequent visitors to the festival.

 – This year we start the festival with a memorial concert in Burträsk church in honour of the master folk musician from Ljusvattnet, Karl Viktor Burman, says Hans-Ove Forssell, event organiser for Burträsksvängen.

There are many families visiting Burträsksvängen to play together and bring the folk music tradition onward to younger generations. During the weekend there are opportunities to get to know new music or music that is part of the musical heritage.

– We also have targeted activities for children with dance games and children’s theatre, says Hans-Ove Forsell.

Here are some of the musicians coming to perform: Thomas Andersson, JP Nyströms, Maria Jonsson & Ian Carr, Heidi Haapasaari & Fredrik Hangasjärvi, as well as this year’s honorary folk musician Rolf Larsson.

Burträsksvängen takes place July 20-22 in Burträsk and has attracted a larger audience each year, becoming a well-known event far outside the borders of Västerbotten.

– We are en route to becoming the biggest summer-time meeting place for folk musicians and people interested in folk music in Norrland, says Hans-Ove Forssell.
