Guide: Campsites for your Norrland break

One couple are returning home from Skåne. The Polish family with a camper has never even been to Sweden before. However, the Norwegian father of young children has been spending summers at Ljusvattnets camping since he was a child. Time away at a Norrland campsite can be deeply pleasurable and sociable.

Despite the small size of the campground, there is a wide range of people living there. The reason is probably its proximity to the E4 highway. When you come across a small campground by a lake, it's possible to make a spontaneous stop because it looks nice.

Spontaneous stops happen frequently, according to the owners, Elisabeth and Otto Lidén.

Many people who have stayed at the campground also return, such as Robin Dahl, who rents a cottage for a week with Kristine Reime and their young son, Storm-Elias. Robin's parents are also here, staying in another cottage. It was actually Robin's parents who discovered the campground initially at least 20 years ago.

A third category of campers who often stay here have received recommendations from friends.

– It's quite common with Norwegians. For a while, it felt like the entire Lofoten region was residing here, Otto says.

The Lidén couple has been operating the campground for 28 years. It features eight cabins and can accommodate up to 30 caravans/motorhomes. However, they have recently started to scale back their operations and now only keep it open for six weeks during the summer season.

– After that, we close up and head out on vacation. We also own a motorhome and love to travel, they explain.

But during Norra's visit, work is the focus. A Polish couple has just checked in, and they are assigned a pleasant spot right next to the lake for their well-equipped camper. Their campsite has an adventurous vibe, providing a contrast to the more traditional setups.

– We have been to Nordkapp and even went diving in Norway. Now, after two weeks on the road, we are heading back home, says Kaisa Bobilewicz from Krakow.

They have been driving intensively from Norway and plan to have a rest day at Ljusvattnets camping. They are looking forward to taking a dip in the lake and cooking meals in their well-equipped outdoor kitchen.

– Maybe we will stay for two nights. It looks nice here, adds Bobo, looking around.

The pleasantness of the campground is also confirmed by Ronny and Amal Öhgren from Skellefteå. They discovered the campground in the summer of 2021 when it was hot, and they wanted to get away somewhere during the last week of their vacation.

–This was the only place where we could get a spot, says Amal.

The week left a lasting impression, and the following year, they reserved a spot for six consecutive weeks.

They currently have their grandchild visiting, and they mention that the campground may not be the best for children as there is no playground. However, they enjoy the tranquility and the pleasant view of the lake.

– It's not too far to the city, so if we want a change, we can go there and do something. This feels like having a summer cottage, says Ronny.

Lastly, it should be mentioned that the campground is located eight kilometers south of Bureå. There is a significantly larger village called Ljusvattnet north of Burträsk.

"Yes, it happens that people get lost. They set their GPS to the wrong location and then drive without paying attention," says Elisabeth.
