In the spring of 2024, Skellefteå Kraft and OKQ8 plan to open the hydrogen filling stations, as reported by VK.

– They will be the first public hydrogen stations in Västerbotten, but we believe that hydrogen as a fuel will primarily be an option for heavy vehicles, says Ann-Christine Schmidt, chief of research, development, and innovation at Skellefteå Kraft.

The joint hydrogen initiative by Skellefteå Kraft and OKQ8 is backed by government investment. The companies also applied for government support to build hydrogen refuelling stations in Lycksele and Skellefteå, but the application was only approved for investments in Umeå and Storuman.

Cars with fuel cells can use hydrogen. Fuel cells convert oxygen and hydrogen into electricity, which powers the vehicles' electric motors.
